Danish Foreign Minister Summons US Diplomat
(MENAFN) Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen summoned the US envoy following reports that American nationals are allegedly involved in an influence operation in Greenland.
The country’s state broadcaster DR revealed the development on Wednesday.
Rasmussen firmly stated to DR, "Any attempt to interfere in the internal affairs of the Kingdom will, of course, be unacceptable."
He went on to say that he had directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to request a meeting with the American charge d'affaires at Asiatisk Plads, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.
The move follows an investigation by DR, which discovered that at least three individuals from the US—linked to President Donald Trump and the White House—are believed to be attempting to stir division between Denmark and Greenland.
The latter is a semi-autonomous region within the Kingdom of Denmark, which Trump previously suggested should belong to the United States.
“These are men who travel back and forth between the US and Greenland and who are working to create what you might call a Greenlandic secessionist movement,” explained Niels Fastrup, an investigative reporter at DR.
According to Fastrup, these operatives are said to be forming local alliances, embedding themselves in various networks, and compiling lists categorizing individuals based on their stance towards Trump and the proposed acquisition of Greenland.
In addition, DR reported that the Danish Security and Intelligence Service in Greenland confirmed the region has been subjected to several foreign influence operations.
While the White House has not yet commented on the allegations, the US Embassy in Copenhagen did issue a response through a government spokesperson.
