Trump denies rare earth minerals motive in Greenland acquisition push
"I want Greenland for security. I don't want it for anything else. We have so much rare earth, we don't know what to do with it. We don't need it for anything else," Trump said while meeting NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
He added, "In terms of Greenland, you know, you have to go 25 feet (8 meters) down through ice to get it. It's not something that a lot of people are going to do, or want to do. No, this is security we're talking about."
Trump’s interest in Greenland has been linked to its strategic Arctic location, extensive mineral wealth, and concerns about increasing Russian and Chinese influence. Critics warn that a US push to acquire the island could strain Western alliances, though the US already maintains military bases and forces there under existing agreements.
Denmark and Greenland have repeatedly rejected proposals to sell the territory, reaffirming Danish sovereignty. Asked about the type of deal he envisions with Denmark, Trump declined to provide details, stating, "We'll see what happens."
